ALBUQUERQUE
Janaína Albuquerque is an attorney specialising in International Family Law, qualified to practise in both Brazil and Portugal. She holds a Law degree from the University of Brasília (Brazil) and a Master's in International Law from the University of Lisbon (Portugal). She is also a cross-border family mediator registered with MiKK e.V. (Germany).
Her professional background spans some of the most distinguished institutions in the field, including the Brazilian Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Human Rights; the Hague Conference on Private International Law (HCCH) in the Netherlands; and CCAA | Law Firm in Portugal. In 2021, she founded Albuquerque | Advocacia Internacional, a boutique firm dedicated to high-complexity cross-border family matters.
On the academic side, Janaína has attended courses at the Hague Academy of International Law (Netherlands), completed a research exchange programme at the Private International Law Institute of Ghent University (Belgium), and served as a Research Associate at the NOVA Centre for the Study of Gender, Family and the Law (Portugal).
Since August 2021, she has been a member of Revibra Europa, a support network for Brazilian women experiencing domestic and gender-based violence abroad. In January 2023, she took on the role of Legal Coordinator of the organisation, leading advocacy, strategic litigation, and institutional relations initiatives, with a particular focus on international child abduction cases.
She has represented Revibra, the Instituto Superação da Violência Doméstica, and the Instituto Maria da Penha as amicus curiae in the Direct Actions for the Declaration of Unconstitutionality no. 4245 and no. 7686 before the Brazilian Supreme Court, both concerning the application of the 1980 Hague Convention. She has participated in public hearings in the Brazilian National Congress and was invited as an expert for the GloboNews documentary "Convenção da Haia: Mães em Luta". She also maintains an active presence in global forums, including the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), the Hague Conference on Private International Law (HCCH), and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR).
Janaína is widely recognised as a leading authority in International Family Law, and is regularly invited to lecture at universities and contribute to academic and institutional initiatives in Brazil and abroad. She frequently engages with the media, with features in publications such as Revista Cláudia, Veja, and the BBC.
In addition, she delivers professional trainings for attorneys and law students since 2022. In 2025, she launched Brazil's first postgraduate specialised programme in International Family Law, in partnership with Universidade Anhanguera.
